NDMA Issues Advisory for “Very High Flood Level” in River Sutlej

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has alerted the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab about the anticipated “very high flood level” in River Sutlej. Vulnerable districts include Kasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, and more.

While River Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala is showing a decreasing trend from a very high flood level, Sulemanki is on a rising trend toward a very high flood level. A high flood level is expected at Islam Headworks on August 22.

Hot, humid weather with rain-wind and thundershowers is forecasted for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. Islamabad, Balochistan, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will experience similar weather patterns.

PDMAs are directed to initiate early warnings, public awareness campaigns, and contingency plans for urban flooding. PDMA Punjab must ensure timely warnings, evacuation, medical care, and relief for those affected by River Sutlej.

For Tarbela and Mangla dams downstream areas, early warning, evacuation, and response plans are essential. GBDMA should take measures to prevent glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF).

Rescue services, armed forces, NGOs, and CSOs are asked to be prepared for rapid response. NDMA reports over 238,202 evacuees, 17,334 evacuated livestock, and deployment of 203 boats and 795 rescue personnel. APP
