Sugar shortage grips major cities; price steady at Rs190

Pakistan is facing a deepening sugar crisis, with severe shortages reported in several major cities. Prices have surged to around Rs190 per kilogram in some markets, far above the official retail rate of Rs173 per kg.
Despite an agreement between the Ministry of National Food Security and the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) to supply sugar at Rs165 per kg ex-mill from mid-July, many mills have not complied, leading to supply disruptions and unchecked price hikes. Wholesale rates currently range between Rs174 and Rs178, while retail prices vary between Rs180 and Rs190.
Consumers in Lahore and Islamabad report empty shelves and difficulty finding sugar, raising fears of hoarding and stockpiling. To tackle the crisis, the government has moved to increase oversight of mill stocks, placing officials at production sites to monitor supply and ensure compliance. A grievance redressal committee and a digital coordination platform have also been set up to address concerns and improve communication between authorities and industry stakeholders.
Authorities stress their commitment to stabilizing prices, ensuring adequate supply, and protecting the interests of both producers and consumers, but shortages continue to strain households across the country.
