General Asim Munir Promoted to Field Marshal Rank, Becomes Second in Pakistan’s History

Islamabad: In a landmark development, the Federal Cabinet of Pakistan, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the elevation of General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal — the highest military rank in the Pakistan Armed Forces. This makes General Asim Munir only the second individual in the country’s history to be honored with this title, following General Muhammad Ayub Khan.

The cabinet meeting, held in Islamabad, also addressed key matters related to national security and defense, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s strategic posture. A unanimous decision was made to continue the services of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar, with members acknowledging his professional excellence and critical role in safeguarding the country’s airspace.

Speaking during the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that Pakistan’s security forces have rendered unparalleled sacrifices in the defense of the homeland and that their services are held in the highest regard. He described the approval of the Field Marshal rank as a “historic and extraordinary step” in the country’s military legacy.

Following the announcement, Field Marshal Asim Munir expressed deep gratitude, stating:

“I thank Allah Almighty for this honor. I dedicate this rank to the people of Pakistan, the Pakistan Armed Forces, and especially to the martyrs and veterans — both civil and military — who have served the nation with unwavering resolve.”

He also extended his appreciation to the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister, and the Federal Cabinet for placing their trust in him:

“This is not a personal achievement; it is a symbol of national honor, and I am ready to sacrifice countless Asims to uphold the trust this nation has placed in me.”

General Asim Munir’s elevation to Field Marshal, which carries significant symbolic weight but no additional operational command, is seen as a recognition of his strategic leadership, particularly during critical national security challenges.

This move not only honors his contributions but also sends a strong message of unity, professionalism, and institutional respect within Pakistan’s defense establishment. Analysts say the decision is likely to further boost morale within the armed forces and reinforce public trust in the military’s role in national defense.

With this promotion, Field Marshal Asim Munir now joins the ranks of Pakistan’s military legends, marking a new chapter in the nation’s defense history.
