Deadly Heatwave Claims Lives of Over 65 Peacocks in Thar

The scorching heat sweeping across the Thar Desert has turned deadly for one of the region’s most sensitive and majestic birds — the peacock. Over 65 peacocks have died during the recent heatwave, with government efforts to protect the vulnerable birds proving largely ineffective.
According to local residents, hundreds of peacocks are reportedly ill due to the intense heat and lack of medical treatment, resulting in the daily death of over a dozen birds. The situation has become critical in several areas of Tharparkar district, where the heatwave has disrupted human lives and proven lethal for wildlife.
Wildlife department officials confirmed that 65 peacocks have died this week alone in various rural areas of Mithi, Islamkot, and Diplo tehsils. While the authorities acknowledge the deaths, they have yet to implement adequate measures to treat the sick birds or prevent further casualties.
Every year, peacocks in Thar fall victim to diseases and food shortages, especially during extreme weather conditions. Conservationists and locals are now urging the wildlife department to take immediate and practical steps to protect the region’s iconic birds before the losses become irreversible.
