3 Police Officials Arrested For Stripping, Abusing Man In Police Station

PESHAWAR: Three police officials allegedly involve in stripping and abusing a man in police station are arrested on Wednesday after the video went viral on social media.

A video of police officers beating a man and tearing his clothes apart went viral on social media. It can be seen that the police officers paraded the man naked in the police station. The social media reports state that the accused man, identified as Amir, was drunk. However, the police officials, instead of dealing with the man according to law resorted to torturing and parading him naked in the police station.

The three Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police officers have been arrested now.

“This SHO belongs to Peshawar Tahkal police station. A drunk citizen abused him unintentionally. He arrested him named Amir Tahkal and made him naked, filmed him and viral his naked video instead of charging him under the law and constitution. He must be punished the same way,” a Twitter user said.

Zahoor Babar Afridi – SSP (operations) Peshawar – in a video message, said the police high command had taken “strict notice” of the incident after the video went viral and promised that the “due course of law” will be followed.

He said the three policemen involved in the incident had been suspended and booked under the Code of Criminal Procedure and KP Police Act, 2017.

In addition, the Thekal station house officer (SHO) was suspended for “poor supervision”, Afridi added.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan took notice of the incident and sought a report from the provincial police chief.

Meanwhile, KP Inspector General Dr Sanaullah Abbasi directed the Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) to conduct an inquiry of the incident and submit a detailed report.

At a press conference, Adviser to Chief Minister on Information Ajmal Wazir said that a committee had been formed to probe the incident that will submit its report “within a day”. He added that the KP government will not tolerate this “brutality” and the matter will be investigated in a transparent manner.

Police brutality has now become a topic which is being discussed worldwide. The attention to this topic came with the murder of George Floyd in America. Since his murder at the hands of the police, mass protests have taken place demanding the defunding of police. Chances of protests against police brutality and defunding of police in Pakistan are very low.

Aimal Wali Khan – ANP President – in his tweet condemned the incident and demanded judicial inquiry of the case. “We reject internal police inquiry and demand judicial inquiry to make it an example”, he stated.
