Babar Salim Swati Chosen KP Assembly Speaker

Babar Salim Swati from the Sunni Ittehad Council was elected as the speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Thursday. He secured 89 votes against Ehsanullah Khan of PPP. The JUI-F lawmakers did not participate in the election.

The Deputy Speaker’s position will be contested between Saroya Bibi of the Sunni Ittehad Council and Arbab Waseem of the PTI.

Babar Salim Swati is expected to receive over ninety votes, ensuring his election as Speaker without hindrance.

There is a possibility of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam boycotting the elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Babar Salim Swati won as a member of the provincial assembly from PK-37. In the 2018 general elections, he defeated Zahoor Ahmed of the Muslim League-N in both contests.

Abdul Manan Khan and Laiq Muhammad Khan will take the oath today as provincial assembly members.

The Election Commission confirmed the success of Abdul Manan Khan and Laiq Muhammad Khan.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly includes 30 reserved seats, with 26 for women and four for minorities, reflecting the province’s commitment to inclusivity and representation.

In the February 8 general elections, PTI-backed candidates won 86 seats, followed by JUI-F with 7, PPP with 4, PMLN with 5, and independent candidates securing 5 seats, with two joining PTI and three aligning with PML-N.
