Senate passes bill to curb powers of CJP amid opposition by PTI

Islamabad: The Senate has passed the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 despite opposition from PTI lawmakers.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar introduced the bill in the Senate and despite the PTI’s attempts to disrupt proceedings, the bill received 60 votes in favor and 19 against it. T

he bill aims to limit the chief justice of Pakistan’s suo motu jurisdiction.

The National Assembly has already passed the bill, with Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar introducing it and ruling out the need for a constitutional amendment.

The bill provides for certain practices and procedures of the Supreme Court.
