Peshawar declared Smoke-Free District

Peshawar has been officially declared a Smoke-Free District in a landmark ceremony organized by the District Administration in collaboration with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tobacco Control Cell and civil society organization Blue Veins. This initiative marks a significant step toward improving public health and combating tobacco use in the region.

The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including government departments, academia, police, health authorities, trade and transport associations, bar associations, youth groups, and civil society organizations. Their collective commitment highlighted the importance of multi-sectoral efforts in creating a smoke-free environment.

Additional Deputy Commissioner General Rao Hashim, leading the District Administration’s efforts, emphasized the transformative impact of this initiative. He stated, “Tobacco smoke-free environments are essential to safeguarding non-smokers, reducing tobacco consumption, and fostering compliance with public health laws. We are committed to ensuring Peshawar remains a healthier, smoke-free city.”

This declaration aligns with Pakistan’s tobacco control laws and international commitments under the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The decision was driven by growing awareness of the severe health risks associated with tobacco use and second-hand smoke.

Ajmal Shah, Coordinator of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tobacco Control Cell, stressed the importance of partnerships in achieving this milestone. “The declaration of Peshawar as a Smoke-Free District showcases the power of collaboration between government, civil society, and community organizations. Together, we can protect public health and build a healthier future,” he remarked.

Qamar Naseem from Blue Veins highlighted the role of civil society in this achievement. He said, “By mobilizing communities, raising awareness, and advocating for enforcement, civil society plays a crucial role in supporting tobacco control measures. This declaration reflects what we can achieve through collective action.”

The initiative’s comprehensive approach involves various sectors, including transport, education, trade, and hospitality. Youth groups and academic institutions have pledged continued support through awareness campaigns and enforcement efforts to sustain this progress.

Declaring Peshawar a Smoke-Free District demonstrates the District Administration’s commitment to the health and well-being of its residents. Beyond enforcing tobacco control laws, it aims to promote a cultural shift toward a smoke-free lifestyle.

The ceremony concluded with participants unanimously pledging to sustain their efforts in implementing this initiative and advocating for similar measures in other districts.
