KPIC Directs Excise Department to Upload Narcotics, Car Smuggling Data on Website
Following a complaint filed by citizen Muhammad Naeem, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission has directed the Excise and Taxation Department to make crucial information regarding narcotics and car smuggling cases publicly available on its website.
The department is now required to disclose information including the number of FIRs registered for narcotics and car smuggling offenses, the number of vehicles seized in Peshawar and Mardan, and the conviction rates for these cases. This will include details on how many individuals were convicted and how many were released on bail.
Furthermore, the Excise and Taxation Department must publish the number of confiscated vehicles currently parked in its Peshawar safe house and Excise Police stations. The public also has the right to know the department’s rules and regulations for allocating such vehicles to private persons.
The Information Commission took a strong stance against the department’s failure to attend the hearing regarding Muhammad Naeem’s RTI request. The commission emphasized that the request was simple and clear, seeking only data and departmental rules. Due to the department’s absence, the commission has chosen to inform the Excise and Taxation Secretary about these procedural lapses.
