Court Acquits Yasir Shami in Aamir Liaquat Video Leak Case

KARACHI: The District and Sessions Court (East) in Karachi has accepted the appeal of journalist and YouTuber Yasir Shami, overturning an earlier decision that had rejected his request for acquittal in the case of allegedly leaking obscene photos and videos of late television host Aamir Liaquat Hussain.
The court heard Shami’s appeal against the judicial magistrate’s earlier ruling that dismissed his plea for acquittal. The Sessions Court accepted the appeal, effectively clearing him from the case.
Shami’s lawyer argued that there was no evidence against his client. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) report also found no proof linking him to the leaked content. The lawyer further told the court that in a supplementary challan, the FIA declared the evidence against Shami insufficient and recommended removing his name from the case. However, the judicial magistrate had rejected the FIA’s findings and dismissed the acquittal request, prompting Shami to file the appeal in the Sessions Court.
The case originated from a complaint by Aamir Liaquat’s daughter regarding the circulation of indecent images and videos of her father.Aamir Liaquat Hussain was found unconscious at his Karachi residence in June 2022 and was later declared dead at the hospital. In the weeks before his death, he had faced intense public scrutiny after inappropriate videos allegedly involving him and his last wife, Dania Malik, surfaced online.
Following his death, in July 2022, Liaquat’s first wife, Bushra Iqbal, along with their children, filed a complaint with the FIA against Dania Malik under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. Malik was later arrested in Lodhran in October 2022 but was released on bail by a Karachi court.
