Assistant Professor Arrested After Harassment Video at Vehari University Goes Viral

Vehari police on Tuesday arrested an assistant professor after a video circulating on social media showed him allegedly harassing female students at a university in Vehari.
According to officials, District Police Officer (DPO) Vehari Muhammad Afzal took strict notice of the incident as soon as the video went viral online. Following his directions, the Sheikh Fazil police registered a case against Assistant Professor Dr. Yahya Khan.
The FIR was lodged on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Dilshad Hussain at Police Station Sheikh Fazil, naming Dr. Yahya Khan as the accused. Police stated that a special team arrested the assistant professor and placed him in the lockup.
DPO Muhammad Afzal said that harassment of women at educational institutions, markets, or workplaces would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He emphasized that immediate action would be taken on any such complaint. He reiterated that the police are committed to ensuring swift response and accountability in all cases involving the safety and dignity of women.
He further stated that, in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Vehari Police is determined to make the district as safe as possible for women. The DPO added that protecting women from harassment and creating secure spaces for them remains a top priority for the police force.
Growing Concern: Harassment in Educational Institutions
Recent data and media reports paint a troubling picture across Pakistan’s educational sector. According to a report obtained through an RTI request by The Reporters, seven universities in Islamabad collectively registered 58 harassment complaints; among them, the majority came from female students. At one institution alone — COMSATS University Islamabad — 41 complaints were recorded, 31 from female students and 10 from female faculty members.
In the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), between January and December 2024, as many as 163 harassment cases were reported to the provincial ombudsperson; of those, 132 were resolved, 24 referred elsewhere, five remained active, and two were on hold. The majority of these cases originated from educational institutions.
